KATHY JAFFEE CHALLENGE RESULTS

30 pilots competed in 5 power categories. Advanced and Unlimited got to a great start on Friday... following a day of sitting, talking, eating, more sitting, walking around and more eating and drinking on Saturday due weather. Sunday, low ceilings restricted the remaining categories to fly the Alternate Knowns... and with almost no one ever practicing them, you could call this an Unknowns contest.

Thank you to all the participants and volunteers! We'll see you next year!!

Alex and the rest of the gang at Chapter 52!

Contest Director - Ron Chadwick

The poor weather on Saturday didn’t keep us from having a great time. In fact, four of us from Chapter 35 were treated to a NYPD strip search. Sure enough, the car we were in had expired New Jersey plates (not just expired – 35 months expired). The swarm of squad cars that descended upon us looked like locusts closing in on a wheat field. Fortunately, they released us on our own recognizance (they saw my 13-year-old son in the back and assumed that at least one of us had some level of responsibility!!)

NEW MEMBERS

Ok, so I’m a little late on these announcements – Better late than never? Chapter 35 welcomes five new members this season.

Bill Gordon, Mike Ganor, George Coy, David Klingbiel, and Steve McCalmont.

Mike flies out of Mansfield and is looking to buy (into?) his first acro ride. He is currently flying Dave Watson’s Super Decathlon and the experience of the outstanding handling and power characteristics have so spoiled him that he just can’t see himself settling for anything less - like one of those toy little biplanes from Afton. George has been our Contest Director at Springfield for the last two years and must have just gotten around to joining the Chapter. Bill joined us at Springfield this year (his first contest ever) and flies a Starduster. His previous rides have had slightly higher power to weight ratios (F4, A6, F15 etc.) but he opted for the Starduster over them so that the judges could see his hammer at the top of the vertical line. Dave is a pseudo defector from Chapter 52 and flies under multiple flags. This can be a real drag, since it qualifies him to stay behind and clean up at all contests sponsored by either chapter (which he does willingly). Steve is one of the unfortunate pilots to fly an Extra 300L. Some of us have to suffer. Steve flies out of Nashua, NH and flies in the Sportsman category. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome. Now the bad news – as a welcome gift, one of you gets to be Newsletter Editor for 2 years!!!!!!!

BOK TALK

The season is coming to a close. There are only two "local" contests remaining which are the Warrenton and Pocono contests. Dave Watson, Mike Ganor and I had a beautiful flight to Warrenton on September 22 only to be informed upon arrival that the contest had been cancelled due to the anticipated weather forecast for the following Saturday and Sunday. Having gone through the cancellation at Orange this year with Steve, I can only say that they made the right decision. The contest has been rescheduled for October 6 – 8.

After a long summer of mediocre weather, we finally had beautiful weather at our Orange, MA and Springfield, VT contests. Special thanks goes to the CD’s for both contests; Steve Pennypacker and George Coy. Coordinating all the activities for the contest can be quite very time consuming, especially for Steve where we had to plan for multiple dates. A special thanks also goes to Craig Lesinski and Jim Parker for Chief Judging the Springfield, VT contest and to Jim Ward for Chief Judging the Orange contest. Organizing and running two contests in one year can be an overwhelming activity. I am always amazed at the talent in our club and the willingness to get the contests completed in a safe manner.

We have had two losses from the chapter this year. In April, Val Beaudrault, one of the Chapter founders and President for many years passed away. Chapter 35 sponsered Val to be added to the EAA Memorial Wall at Oshkosh. Special thanks go to Ed Morse for coordinating the Memorial Wall effort. More recent, Myron Goulian passed away in September after a long illness. Myron’s family is well known for operating Executive Flyers, their flight school operation located at Bedford Airport in Bedford, MA. Both were a very important part of Chapter 35 and we would not be where we are today if not for their effort and dedication. Our condolences go to both families. They will be missed.

There have been several changes in members and their aircraft. Neal Frangesh and Bill Stuart have purchased a Pitts S2B and will be selling their S1T. Ray Mooreman has sold his Pitts S2A and is in the process of purchasing Sheldon Apsell’s Pitts S2B. Sheldon has almost completed the acquisition of an Extra 300L. Ron Burns is in transition as he is selling his Pitts S2B and purchasing an Extra 230. Congratulations on all the new acquisitions. As they say, the happiest time for an aircraft owner is when they purchase an airplane and when they sell an airplane (only to purchase the next one).

See you at the contest or the next meeting in Mansfield. - Hans

Special Request: Anyone requiring reimbursement for expenses related to either of the Chapter 35 contests please submit them immediately to Sheldon Apsell. We need to close the books on these contests.

NE CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS

They say the third try's a charm, and it was true for this year’s New England Aerobatic Championships. After two reschedules, we finally ended up with four days of perfect weather. Practice was held on Thursday, with nine pilots getting all the box time they wanted. Life just doesn't get any better than having a whole day to play with a Super Decathlon right over an airport! We were surprised to see more Basic and Sportsman pilots practicing than all upper categories combined. Two passenger rides were given, and I think we've got two new acro addicts. After several intro maneuvers, one of them even elected to ride through the whole Sportsman sequence, and survived it. This was her first acro ride ever. The rescheduling resulted in fewer competitors flying than in recent years. Less pilots means more flying for everyone, and fly we did. We extended practice on Friday to give everyone a chance to get at least a flight or two in the box. Intermediate and Advanced still got in two flights that afternoon, followed by more practice for the Basic and Sportsman folks all the way to sunset. All categories flew at least once on Saturday, with Basic and Sportsman flying twice. Our CD confirmed the "improvisationally challenged" nature of the judges when he substituted a second hammer for a wedge in the Sportsman Free. He says "he put it in there for symmetry. Honest! Didn't you guys get my Free flimsies? Judges just don't appreciate artistry!"

Unlimited had only one competitor, who elected to fly Advanced rather than not fly. Despite flying what amounted to four unknown flights, Craig "Yakboy" Lesinski came away with top honors for the contest. Now there's someone who can think on his feet. Speaking of what he can do on his feet, Craig's new nickname is "Sumo", after his impersonation of Akebono at the banquet. And speaking of top honors, Ron Burns, Bill Matukaitis, and Joe Keenan teamed up with Yakboy for a full Chapter 35 sweep of the #1 spot in every category (gloat, gloat). Despite the great weather on Friday, we had a minor "weather related" incident, when a certain acro pilot, who will remain nameless, taxied his "other" airplane around in the dirt, kicking up a dust storm that raged through the terminal building and half way to Boston. Since the anonymous but good-humored pilot wasn't there to defend himself on Sunday at the awards ceremony, the choice of who would earn this year's coveted Hammer Head award was obvious. The "Most Colorful Arrival" award has to go to our friends from Chapter 91 whose tight formation of two Extras led by a Long EZ split directly overhead the FAA representative on-field . A fourth showed up the next day in their Cub. I think all 4 planes started out together… Overall, the contest was very successful. The smaller number of competitors was made up for by everyone getting in more practice and contest flights than usual (thanks to Mary Harris at IAC for tracking down the IAC Sanctioning Committee in Texas and amending our sanction on the fly), and also by the more relaxed atmosphere (a key factor for a first-time Contest Director). We even had time to discuss the logistics of nude acro... The support of the airport and community were great, as always. Virtually everyone pitched in to help out and they all deserve to be recognized. But a few really stand out for the effort they put in. Particularly Jim Ward (Chief judge), Warren Crossfield (Scorer), and Rob Petit (Registrar), who all took vacation days to work long and largely thankless hours so that the rest of us could fly, despite not flying themselves. Thanks, guys. – Steve

NOTE: On Sunday morning of the contest, a digital camcorder was found missing from the airport manager’s office. Numerous people were using this room to store personal belongs and it is hoped that it inadvertently ended up in someone’s flight bag. If you happen to find it amongst your goodies, please call Rob Petit at (781) 646-5038.

SPRINGFIELD CONTEST RESULTS

Once again Chapter 35 sponsored the Green Mountain Aerobatic Contest at Springfield, VT with surprisingly good weather (for the NE). 20 pilots competed in 4 categories with all flights being flown. Thanks to all for attending and making the contest a success. Although we had excellent weather at the contest all weekend, threatening weather was closing in to the North and South and some competitors had to leave early Sunday to get home. Bill Crawford had a technical problem with the Giles and had to fly home to get one of his back-up stunt planes. He missed the Free flight but did the Intermediate Unknown in his Airwolf having never flown a complete sequence in it. Guenther flew Basic in a stock Stearman and just edged out Joe Keenan for the Grassroots award. Craig and Hans were unchallenged in their respective categories so they decided to compete against each other in Advanced.

5 Star Flying

As a result of his stellar flying at the Kathy Jaffee Challenge, Craig Lesinski earned the distinguished Unlimited Achievement with Stars Award. By scoring over 5 from all judges on all figures flown in the contest, he became only the 95th pilot in IAC history (over 30 years) to achieve this mark. Congratulations Craig on your outstanding accomplishment.
